Content Standards


01    Reading: Students will demonstrate knowledge of the concepts of print.
  • Identify variations in print (e.g., font, size, bold, italic, upper/lower case)
  • Explain that the purpose of print is to carry information (e.g., environmental print, names)
  • Demonstrate voice to print match (e.g., student points to print as someone reads)
  • Demonstrate understanding that words are made up of letters
  • Identify parts of a book (e.g., cover, pages, title, author, illustrator)

 In kindergarten, I assess each and every student using the Omaha Public School K-2 Reading Assessment. This assesses students' reading abilities in the following areas:


* Phonics and word analysis
   - Letter and sound recognition
   - High frequency words 
   - Initial sounds
   - Blending
   - Segmenting
   - Rhyming
   - Writing Picture Names

* Word Analysis
   -Early literacy behaviors

* Vocabulary 
   - Color Words

I will continually assess each student throughout the year using this district assessment so that I can measure and document their growth. The scores that come from the reading assessments assist in grading each student on specific areas of the report cards. 



 Apples, Apples & More Apples

Apple Juice
Different Kinds of Apples
Wash and slice the apples. Enjoy tasting all the different ways to eat and drink apples!
Banana Bread
1 stick butter
1 C. Sugar
1 egg
3 bananas, mashed
2 C. flour
1 t. soda
½ t. salt
¼ C. water
2 t. vanilla
Mix all together. Grease and flour pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Makes 2 medium or 4 small loaf pans.
Carrot Cupcakes
1 box carrot cake mix
1 ¼ C. water
1/3 C. oil
3 eggs
1 can cream-cheese icing
Mix cake mix, water, oil and eggs in a large bowl until moistened. Beat 2 minutes by hand Pour batter into paper lined muffin pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes. Frost when cooled. Make 24-30.
Donut Balls
1-3 cans biscuits
Powdered/cinnamon sugar
Oil for frying
Using a donut holer, cut 5-6 holes in each biscuit. Fry in oil that has been preheated to 350 degrees for 30 seconds or until brown. Drain on paper towels, then shake in sugar if desired. 
Eskimo Pies
1 quart vanilla ice cream
Chocolate chip cookies
Put one scoop of ice cream on top of one cookie. Put another cookie on top and press down gently. Roll the sides in sprinkles. 
Frosted Graham Crackers
1 box graham crackers
1 can frosting (flavor is your choice)
Break graham cracker into 2 parts. Frost graham cracker. Add sprinkles. 
Grilled Cheese Sandwich
2 slices of bread
1 slice of cheese
Butter or margarine
Put the cheese in between the slices of bread. Spread the butter on the outside of each slice of bread. Grill in a hot pan until the outside is golden brown.
Hamburger Cookies
1 box vanilla wafers
1 pkg. red Fruit Roll-Ups
1 box flat chocolate cookies
Green tinted coconut
Lay one vanilla wafer upside down. Put the chocolate cookie on top. Put a circle of Fruit Roll-Up on top of the cookie. Sprinkle green coconut on top and put 1 more vanilla wafer on the very top. This will look like 2 buns with a hamburger, tomato and lettuce!
Ice Cream Sundaes
Vanilla and chocolate ice cream
Chocolate syrup
Caramel syrup
Crushed Oreo cookies
Put 1 scoop of each flavor ice cream into a bowl. Put a spoonful of each syrup on top of the ice cream. Sprinkle with the cookie bits and enjoy!
Jello Jigglers
2 pkgs. Jello gelatin (8 oz)
2 ½ cups boiling water
Stir boiling water into gelatin in medium bowl at least 3 minutes until completely dissolved. Pour into 9 x 13 inch pan. Refrigerate 3 hours or until firm. Dip bottom of pan in warm water for 15 seconds. Using cookie cutters cut out shapes. 
Krispie Treats
3 T. butter/margarine
4 C. mini-marshmallows
6 C. Rice Krispies cereal
Melt butter in a pan over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until melted. Remove from heat. Add Rice Krispies and stir until well coated. Using a spatula press into 13 x 9 pan sprayed with cooking oil. Cut when cool.
Lemon-Lime Punch
3 2-liter bottles of lemon-lime pop (Sprite or 7-Up)
1 box lime sherbet
1 6oz. can limeade
1 6oz. can lemonade
Stir together in a large bowl until sherbet is almost melted. 
Mud Cake
1 pkg. Oreo cookies, crushed
1 pkg. gummy worms
8 oz. cream cheese
1 C. powdered sugar
12 oz. Cool Whip
2 pkgs. Instant chocolate pudding (small box)
3 ½ C. milk
Mix cream cheese and powdered sugar. Mix milk and pudding, then add Cool Whip. Stir pudding mixture and cream cheese mixture together. Layer Oreos and pudding, ending with the Oreos on the top. Refrigerate 1 hour to set. 
1 bag tortilla chips
1 bag shredded cheddar cheese
1 jar salsa
1 container sour cream
Place tortilla chips on a microwavable safe plate. Add desired amount of cheese. Cook in microwave until cheese is melted.  Top with salsa and sour cream.
Octopus Cookies
1 pkg. Oreo cookies
1 pkg. pretzel sticks
1 tube white frosting
Take one Oreo cookie and stick 8 pretzels into the cream filling to look like legs. Squeeze on two dots of frosting to look like eyes. 
Puppy Chow
8 C. Crispix cereal
1 C. chocolate chips
½ C. peanut butter
½ stick margarine
1 t. vanilla
1 ½ C powdered sugar
Melt chocolate chips in a pan. Mix in peanut butter, margarine and vanilla. Stir in cereal. Mix until coated. Shake cereal in a bag with powdered sugar.
Quick No-Bake Cookies
2 pkgs. Butterscotch chips (12 oz. each)
1 pkg. chowmein noodles (12 oz.)
1 C. mini-marshmallows
Melt chips in a pan. Add chowmein noodles and marshmallows. Scoop a spoonful and drop onto a cookie sheet until hard.
Robin’s Nests
10 ½ oz. pkg. mini-marshmallows
1 stick margarine
1 ½ tsp. Cinnamon
5-6 C. All Bran cereal
Melt margarine and marshmallows in a pan. Stir in cinnamon. Stir in cereal until mixture is coated. With wax paper press mixture into muffin cups that have been sprayed with oil. When cooled, fill nests with jelly beans for eggs.
Strawberry Smoothies
1 small box frozen strawberries
1 frozen banana
1 C. vanilla yogurt
Milk (enough to thin)
Mix ingredients in a blender until smooth
Tortilla Roll-Ups
1 8oz. pkg. cream cheese
1 pkg. tortillas
1 pkg. sliced turkey breast
Shredded cheddar cheese
Spread cream cheese on a tortilla. Sprinkle cheese and top. Lay sliced turkey breast on top. Roll the tortilla up and slice into 1” pieces. 
Underwater Dessert
1 pkg. Berry Blue Jello
1 C. boiling water
1 C. cold water
Gummy fish, frogs, etc
Stir boiling water into Jello until dissolved. Stir in cold water. Pour into clear plastic sups and refrigerate 1 hour or until partially set. Add gummy animals and refrigerate 3 more hours or until set.
Vegetables and Very Special Vegetable Dip
Different kinds of veggies
1 pkg. Hidden Valley dip mix
1 16oz. carton sour cream
Mix sour cream with dip mix. Dip vegetables in the Hidden Valley dip and enjoy!
Wild and Wacky Waffles
1 pkg. frozen waffles
Assorted toppings (raisins, whipped cream, syrup, jelly, sprinkles, M&M’s, etc.)
Put the waffle in the toaster. Put toppings on the waffle to look wild and wacky!
X-tra Special X Cookies
1 tube sugar cookie dough
1 can frosting
Sprinkles, candy balls, cinnamon red hots, colored sugar, etc.
Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out until flat. Cut the dough into tall rectangles. Use 2 rectangles and make an X shape. Bake the cookies. When cool, decorate the cookies. 
Yogurt Parfaits
Yogurt (any flavor)
Put some yogurt in a cup. Sprinkle some granola on top of the yogurt. Keep putting layers until the cup is full. 
 Zebra Brownies
1 pkg. brownie mix (19 oz)
1 8oz. pkg. cream cheese
1/3 C. sugar
1 egg
½ t. vanilla
Make brownies as directed on the box. Pour into greased 13 X 9 pan. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add sugar, egg and vanilla. Mix until blended. Pour cream cheese mixture over brownie mixture. Cut through batter with a knife several times to look “zebra” striped. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until cream cheese mixture is lightly browned.
