Springville Elementary First Grade Curriculum – Mrs. Willett

Curriculum Overview:

  • Reading: We are using the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys basal reading program. We will be reading one story as a whole group each week. In addition to our stories, we will be studying phonics, high frequency words, grammar, and writing. We will focus on developing a balanced reading program. Key components of a balanced literacy program are teaching comprehension strategies, word work, fluency, and differentiated reading instruction. Reading will also incorporate The Daily Five. This is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks.  Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused instruction to individuals and small groups of students. The Daily Five is comprised of Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone,  Listen to Reading, and Word Work.
  • Writing instruction is integrated throughout the day. Students will be able to write first and last name, write in complete sentences, identify and write the beginning, middle, and end of a story, follow a narrative and retell in sentence form.
  • Math: The math curriculum is taught with an emphasis on communicating the meaning of numbers. We use the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt math program called “Go Math”.  The students will create patterns, solve one-digit addition and subtraction problems, and measure using standard and non-standard units. The students also learn about fractions, geometry, time, money, and graphing.
  • Social Studies: Topics covered are families and cultures, urban and rural communities, current events, globes and map skills, and satisfying basic needs and wants through choices.
  • Science: Using the Pearson curriculum, students learn about life science (living things), earth science (sky and earth, weather and seasons), and physical science (sound and light).



Reading and math skills are evaluated at the beginning, middle and end of the year using the Omaha Public Schools assessment called MAP tests (Measures of Academic Progress). Reading fluency and comprehension are also assessed at the beginning and end of the year.
